Easily the largest area of employer demand, as I judge it, is for mathematicians and statisticians who have the skills needed to work with small or large datasets. In the talks given by speakers from industry at the ‘Maths for the Future’ forum over 7-8 Feb 2012, all mentioned this demand. For most this was the only area that received specific mention. In the world to which we are now moving, all mathematics graduates surely ought to have substantial, probability, statistics and related computing components in their degrees.
